Kingdom of Borealia
The Kingdom of Borealia is a sovereign nation located in the northern regions of North America. Known for its expansive tundra, emerging urban centres, and distinctive constitutional monarchy, Borealia has rapidly grown in influence due to its strategic geography, resource wealth, and unique political identity. The nation combines traditional monarchical symbolism with modern governance, positioning itself as a rising power in North America.
Etymology
The name "Borealia" derives from the Latin word "borealis", meaning "northern." This reflects both the nation's geographical position and its cultural association with cold climates, resilience, and northern identity.
History
Origins and Secession (Phase I)
Borealia was founded when the settlements of Nortona and Essendine seceded following the American Purge, rejecting the widespread instability. Essendine was soon renamed Montreal, reviving a historical name while marking a new political era. The two formed the sovereign core of the Kingdom of Borealia under a monarchical government.
Frontier Expansion (Phase II)
Once established, Borealia expanded into the sub-arctic territories. Key settlements during this phase were Fort Akimiski (on Akimiski Island, a strategic defence and Arctic gateway) and Auroria (on North Twin Island, dedicated to research and cold-weather infrastructure).
Urban and Metropolitan Integration
- Phase III - Toronto Accession: Seeking stability, Toronto held a referendum and joined Borealia, dramatically boosting the kingdom's economic, urban and political profile.
- Phase IV - Kingston Joins: Kingston later joined to strengthen Borealia's control of eastern waterways and to solidify a continuous urban corridor between Toronto and Montreal.
- Phase V - Metropolitan Expansion: The most recent expansions brought in major industrial cities, Detroit and Chicago, adding manufacturing, trade networks, and further metropolitan influence.
Modern Era
Borealia is now a trans-regional monarchy bridging the Arctic/Sub-Arctic frontier lands and major North American metropolitan areas. Its identity blends northern heritage, frontier resilience, and modern urban power.
